Staring is a challenge or act of dominance. It applies to people as well as to other animals. (I'm not talking of couples looking into each others eyes, but to staring). If you don't believe me go into a non-familiar neighborhood (preferably one populated by an ethnic group different than yours) and stare at a young maturing individual who is trying to establish his position in the community or at one of the community leaders. Or try it with a policeman (who are trained to be dominant over those with whom they interact).

In most cases by staring into an animals eyes you are challanging them. If you are already the dominate one the animal will look away. If not and you have a stare down with them...things might get ugly especially with an unfamiliar animal. Be careful when doing this....animals may bite!

Most animals consider eye contact to be aggressive. Staring is often a prelude to a fight.

Direct eye contact is an act of aggression in the dog world, if you have a good dog who knows whos boss he will always look away. If the dog has dominance aggression issues with people he will stare directly into your eyes and if you dont look away (sign of submission) the dog WILL attack you or end up submitting and looking away himself. You can learn more about this by reading about the social structure of wolves....

Animals typically consider direct eye contact an act of aggression and or a threat.

If you have a domesticated animal that does that, sell it before it kills you in your sleep. : )

my dog looks me in the eye all the time....if i ignore him he will move in front of the TV so i can't avoid him so he can get what he wants! I think maybe you are referring to when an animal shows respect by not looking you in the eye too long?

because you are challenging them. If they accept they will most likely attack you. Eye contatct in the animal world does not mean the same as it does in the human world. Dont challege your pets, its not nice.
