I have a bedroom door that has a key lock on it. It's been on there since I bought the house and never got a key for it. My daughter locked it and closed the door, now I can't get in. It appears to be a Kwikset lock. Can I break the handle and open the door and how could I do this? Or is there some other way? I need to replace it anyway to keep this from happening again, so breaking it wouldn't be a big deal.

If it's keyed on both sides, try the credit card trick. If the key is on the other side, look for a little button on the inside of the knob, press it in with a screwdriver, and pop the knob off. Then pop off the cover over the hole in the door and loosen the two screws. Worst case call a locksmith. Kwiksets are easy to pick if you have the tools. Don't try to break it, you'll damage the door or the frame.

Try taking a flat screwdriver or an old credit/gift card that you do not use and place it between the door and the frame. Line it up so that the screwdriver/card are even with the middle of the lock. Try wedging the screwdriver/card between the door and the frame and this should pop the latch. Wiggle it a little if necessary. Replace the lock later.

Well clearly this person is not your friend. My advice would be to kick the tosser out as soon as possible and replace him with a room mate who has a bit of moral fiber. Your property, possessions, and possibly even your safety are at risk. If it happens again or if its nature escalates, don't feel bad about getting the law involved. Police are your friends when it's YOU they're protecting and serving.

You can unscrew the door hinges and take the whole door off, or you can try taking just the doorknob off. If these options don't work for you, you could try calling a locksmith.

try unscrewing the lock or pop the pins out of the hinges. Otherwise you will have to call a locksmith.

Depending on the door knob you can probaby use a screw driver to take the knob off and then open it with your hand. If you can than you also can change the lock with one you buy at Home Depot.
