i am needing to write on old scratched vinyl records (LP's). i had thought of paint markers but was wondering if some one had a better idea.

If they are not meant to be played, then you'd be best advised to go to an art supply store and get a good set of latex paints. The real problem is that it is VERY tough to get anything to stick to vinyl! Once you get them painted you should use a non-gloss spray to seal them so the work you've done doesn't flake and peal off.

Hair spray works for that - I use it to seal things I've done in pencil and charcoal work.

Those markers are probably as good as it gets. But, get the record too wet and the paint will take off around the grooves (but that might be kinda cool).

Yeah, you couldn't play them after you write on them. But if you still want to, try a white out pen. Those work pretty well at writing on black surfaces.

try enamels or 'Sharpie' permanent markers.
