No one at work knows I'm gay and I don't like to be a "politically-correct" nutjob, but how do you respond when people make offensive statements about how much they "hate queers" or make derogatory jokes about them.

jack f, homophobic is the correct word. Most people who "oppose the gay agenda" won't talk or hug an openly gay man out of a deep internal fear. I'm sorry you can't see that.

I tell them that I find their joke offensive, derogatory and discriminatory (note the "I" statment) and that it is against company policy. I stop them in mid-joke if possible.

If the person continues, I report them to Human Resources.

This is harassment and is against the law. People rightfully stand up against sexual harassment as well.

Everyone deserves to right to a harassment-free workplace.

When I've heard "jokes" then I don't laugh and will tell the person that I don't think that's funny. All you can do is speak up or ignore the homophobic remarks. I would take action to stop it. There are also jokes you could tell that support GLBTQ issues and makes people think about it, like jokes about all people having equal rights and stereotyping people.

I just dont laugh as I don't find them funny. If they ask and you dont want to tell them you are gay you can always say you have a gay friend and you dont think thier remark was funny because you like your friend and don't like others to talk about him like that.
That way you will not have to hear about it and they will try to be more respectful. If they don't then go to your companies personel department and find out if you have an alert line for these kinds of problems in most large companies there is an alertline that alows you to inform an outside monitoring agency of these types of issues without revealing your name.

There 's nothing wrong with admitting you're gay. I - like most people - was wary of gay people. Things changed when I actually came into contact with openly gay people and realised that they're hardly any different. One of my wife and my closest friends where we're living is openly gay and I'm glad to have shed the phobia.

We live in Europe, I don't know if that makes a difference to the attitudes though. In any case laughing at such things stems from ignorance and so-called male bonding junk.

Good luck

It's one thing to be hypersensitive to the point of being a PC nutjob as you call it, but let's put it another way, would a person make a n****r joke in front of a person of colour. Would that be worth speaking up? If you can answer that, you know what you need to do.

Oh yes, on another note, given what One Promises' Blog on July 3rd says about being loving and kind, I find her/his answer to this question proof of both ignorance and stupifying bigotry.

You dont respond, and why do you even bother to join them or be there when they crack such joke in the first place. After all, you like to listen to such remarks whether you are a gay or not.
You chose where you want to be or to hear what you like to hear.

If you really must burn these people with their offensive remarks. you say " You guys really crack me up..I am starting to believe you are living with those people" laugh, stand up and walk away

First, determine if the statement was made by someone who makes fun of all kinds of people, including his or her own kind. If the answer is yes, then leave it alone.

If the comment was indeed meant to be hateful, then it's your choice of whether to speak up or not. By not speaking up, you are telling the other person that it is ok to continue making such remarks.

Your in a working environment, a conversation over anything of hate, sex, religion or anything that's not of work standards shouldn't be said in the first place. At work you are to keep your personal life to yourself. You should tell them to keep their likes and dislikes to themselves and return back to work.If you ever feel the need to come out and tell them that your gay it should be done on your own time. If they feel they hate you and want to do bad things to you because your gay, that is called a hate crime where you should call the police

i imagine gay jokes are humorous too, you both imagine they're humorous or be an asshole and promises **** to whoever stated the shaggy dog tale, it truly is only a waste of time because the jokes will always be there, they're going to always exist, and we purely pick to start up living with them.

Laugh like it is very strange and funny thing. If you can't act well, try to avoid all kind of jokes, be a serious kind of guy concerned with osama and bush and not the stupid jokes.
