If you address someone with a title (Sir/Madam/etc), end with "yours faithfully".

If it is a formal letter you write Sincerely..
(Faithfully is reserved for people you don't know - you can only be faithfully theirs if you have not yet met).

Best off all if its an informal letter sign it off best wishes, love and hugs or whatever you fell is what you want to portray

If you know the person it is sincerely, but only in a professional capacity. You use faithfully for a professional letter to someone you don't know

It depends on how you start the letter. If you start with the persons first name, "sincerely," if you start with "Mr Smith" for example its "faithfully" or "best regards" or whatever...

These are not hard and fast rules, sincerely can be inferred as intimacy, if the recipient hasn't done well in English class.

If the letter begins "Dear" then the person's name it is sincerely. If it is "To Whom It May Concern" it is faithfully.

Depends if your writing a formal letter or not. If it starts with "Dear sir/madam" then you are writing a formal letter & should end it with 'Yours sincerely'. If it's an informal letter and to a friend or family then put 'Yours faithfully'

Hope that helps out.

If the letter opens with 'Dear Sir or Dear Madam, it is 'yours faithfully', if you address the person by name, it is 'yours sincerely'.

Generally speaking, it's "sincerely" if you know them, "faithfully" if you don't.

Basically, if you start your letter "Dear Bob" or "Dear Mr Smith", then you sign off with "sincerely"; if you start "Dear Sir" or "Dear Sir/Madam" or whatever, then it's "faithfully".
