I have a male OBGYN, but it doesn't bother me that he's male because for one, I like it that he doesn't get emotional, that he's really calm about what he does. If ever there is something wrong with my pregnancy or baby or my body, at least by his calm demeanor, I will not end up freaking out. Also, as a male, he's gets on to the point and doesn't dwell on things that may not concern me, and so I avoid having to worry about things that I don't need to worry about. For example, my friend has a female OBGYN, and she tells me that her doctor chats up a storm and tells her all of the other things that could happen to her (which by the way didn't happen to her) and my friend ended up so worried and freaked out by all the things that could possibly go wrong with her pregnancy at the end of the office visit. Sometimes less chatter is best.
Most men doctors are more logical or methodical with their approach than some women doctors. But of course, we can't generalize because as always there are exceptions, and there are lot of women doctors out there who are very good at what they do. It's just a matter of preference for the patient really, depending on what the patient is most comfortable with - a male or female doctor.
It is true that it is quite funny to picture a male doctor lecturing women about delivery, because like what you said, they have never gone through birth and delivery itself. But the thing is they don't have to go through those things to become good doctors, just like the idea that a doctor doesn't have to go through cancer to be able to treat a patient with cancer.

Well they do have an idea because they have seen and listened to women who have experienced it. As well they may have had a wife or girlfriend that had a child... They will never now the pain but there is a reason they go through all that schooling so they do know what they are doing....Just be patient and if you feel like your doc has no clue which some of them don't go see a female cause there are plenty....

Just for the record, OB/GYN's do alot more than deliver children, but you pose an interesting question. Men will never know the experience of birth, just as women will never know the feeling of a prostate exam. I think many of them actually love their jobs and the money involved

Personally I have always prefered a guy to look at me and I felt more comfortable with a male doing the job than a female, I don't know why I guess maybe because while laying on a table with my legs in the air spread to one end to the other and getting poked around by a female I can't help but think that she's thinking in her head all the mean things she can say about me down there to her collegues-sp? but, a male I just think that he's just doing the job and then he's done maybe cause I don't think men gossip but I'm sure they do but, deep down what are the odds compared to women...face it we are evil sometimes.

Most doctors in general are male, but this is changing as more women are opting to enter the field.

I always thought men went into OBGYN for only two reasons: either they were jealous of women's procreative powers, or they were men who, as boys, enjoyed looking up women's skirts with shoe mirrors. (I joke!) I think most OBGYNs are male because of the old boys network, just like most lawyers are men
