Actually they word "Croatoan" was carved into a support beam of the colony's fort. The colony was established on Roanoke island, off the coast of North Carolina, in 1584. Though, at that time, it was considered a part of Virginia.
The first group of colonists on Roanoke returned to England with Sir Francis Drake, as they were unsuccessful at growing food and had earned the enmity of the local natives.
The second group of colonists arrived in 1587. The colony's governor, a Mr. White, returned to England almost immediately to seek aid, as the natives tribes were openly hostile towards the settlement.
Due to the war with Spain, White was unable to return with aid for three years. When he did return he found the colony deserted. Approximately 117 people had just disappeared. The only clue as to what happened being the aforementioned word "Croatoan" carved into a support beam of the fort. This was taken to mean the colonists had fled to seek refuge from the one friendly tribe in the area, the Croatoan's who lived on a nearby Island. Unfortunately a hurricane hit before White could continue his search, so he returned to England.
The prevailing theory is the colonists were absorbed by local tribes. This has been substantiated by archaeological evidence as well as DNA testing.

The History Channel's "Digging Into the Past" show did an episode about the Roanoke colony. After researching the DNA from both English descendants of those families and from Native Americans in the region that have the same surnames as the colonists, it has been concluded that the colonists, in order to survive, moved inland and joined native villages. They became members of those communities, intermarried, and lived their lives the best they could.
Also, the colony was named the Roanoke colony; the word that was found carved upon a tree was "Crotoan."

In 1590 the first Roanoke colony, they carved Croatoan into a tree, more likely the colony failed and the remaining survivors moved to Croatoan island where there was an indian tribe. There were stories of failed colonies joining indian tribes once they had reached the absolute breaking point.
The lost colony of Roanoke is and will always be a mystery as very little survives. The main reason for the failure was They went there not to colonize but to profit and without the proper provissions they failed.

In the late 1500's it was one of the original English settlements in North America. Due to problems they never expected here, wars in Europe, and bad luck they fell on hard times and disappeared before their govenor could return. It's mostly myth and legend because no one knows for sure what happened to them as they never left any written history other than the word "Roanoke" which didn't help the searchers at all.

actually I think it took place in the North Carolina or Virginia area. This was around the time that Europeans were beginning to settle in North America. What exactly to you want to know about it? The people were Europeans and they ran low on supplies or something like that and so their captain went back to Europe (I think), intending on getting them supplies. It took him a few years to get back because there was a war going on in Europe (I think) and when the captain got back he found no one in the settlement. And the word "Croatan" written on the tree. It is believed by some people that the settlers ran out of supplies and joined a local Native American tribe.

I saw a program on the history channel that a blue eyed, blonde mixed tribe with ancestors from roanoke was discovered and one current theory is after some disaster, a war, disease, whatever the survivors were taken prisoner and were forced to breed with the tribe that took them or they simply choose to inter marry to survive.

Most people think that they moved somwhere else because there was no food. But when the leader came back from England to get supplies there were no remains of the people. So it is actually still today an unsolved mystery.

there really isn't much to tell. they all disappeared and no one could find any survivors at all. there was not any sign of struggle or anything packed. all heirlooms and other materials consider precious were left behind. others wanted to blame it on the local indians, but they couldn't prove anything. people tried to tie the CRO to the Indians if i remember correctly.

Only that they haven't come back some suspect that they were either abducted by aliens or killed by natives but because the investigation tools at the time were inferior we can't do much else but speculate
