you have to understand some of the formations within the army , for example from a regiment down, split into companies from companies split into platoons from platoons slit into sectons,every section had a marksmam on the lee enfield 303, within the platoon they had a marksmen (best of the sections) and so on up to brigade level, the choice of weapon was the 303, and some martini henri
rifles, so the quality of the sniper depended on where he was in rank and class even today the sniper is a usefull soldier to have on yourside with modern technology the accuracy and distances have improved, nightsights, starlight scopes none of these was available just excellent feildcraft, and patience, and lots of balls.

British Snipers were some of the most notorious in the world during the war, as were our commando brigades.
From my days of Military History, British Snipers would often crosee the channel with a Commando brigade and set off by themselves. They would support and cover units from either surrounding hills, with a guard or two to keep watch over him, or join their units in fighting for direct-fire support.

depends on which battle you're talking about. But I thought they were pretty disorganised in their small groups which were prone to becoming isolated, but my daddy knows more about this than me.
