If it was a save situation, Jones would not be in the game because he sucks!

Because they had over a three run lead and therefor doesn not qualify for a save
For about the past two decades, the general practice has been for a closer to enter the game to pitch the ninth inning when his team is ahead by three runs or fewer, which aligns with the requirements to get a save. If the game is important (e.g., a playoff game), the closer has not had much opportunity to pitch during recent games, or for other reasons, the manager may opt to bring him in during the eighth inning. If the closer fails at his task by letting the other team tie the game or take a lead, he has blown the save.

Todd Jones is on my fantasy team and i was wondering the same thing the tigers were winning by 3 runs and he closed the game.i thought that was the criteria for a save. your team winning by 3 or less runs or more than 3 innings which everybody knows jonesie will never do.whatever as long as the tigers win

Because it was NOT a save situation. Jamie Walker came in to pitch to Jim Thome (1 for 6 against Walker).
Jim Leyalnd asked Jones to give up that save situation so that Walker could pitch to Thome.
That is why The Tigers ae winning so well....The Players are willing to forego thier ego to win for THE TEAM.
It doesnt matter HOW The Tigers get a "W", as long as they get one.

I was thinking the same thing because he entered the game with one out in the ninth inning and the score was 5-2. It fits the criteria of a save situation. Sorry I couldn't help.

the tying run wasn't on deck so u won't get a save if the tying run is at the plate or pitch 2 or more innings
