Your answer is almost on mark, but not quite. In point of fact, we have sold our souls and the soul of our nation to multinational corporations.

Survive? I wasn't aware it was all that difficult.
Presently I live in Essex county, MA... the area of the country with the most inflated real estate prices and get along fine!
You do like every other person in the country. You work, two jobs if necessary, and save save save. You NEVER use credit unless you HAVE to, and only then if youre absolutely sure that you can pay it back within three months time. The exception here is a car loan or mortgage, or a student loan.
getting started is the hard part. once you get experience and work hard to excel, you'll be promoted and things will be easier. in the meantime credit cards are only good for an emergency reserve of cash.
Working hard used to be an American value... now its not anymore. with welfare and all this government subsidization, everyone expects life to be so easy and forgiving. often if you come from a family on gov't support there is no motivation to go out and get a real job.

Debt for education, or a MODEST home is not the same as credit card debt or other consumer debt such as car debt... Believe it or not you don't have to have credit card debt and a car payment... you simply choose to have less, or do without, or settle for the bare minimum until you can afford more. Most (not all) debt problems are self inflicted wounds that could have been avoided.

Yes we have sold our souls to banks. And with that sale we have homes and cars we really can not afford.
