Allegedly, Goofy was originally designed as an improved image for another character called Horace Horsecollar, but then the two were both shown in a cartoon together, disproving that theory.
Some "experts" say that Goofy is 'caninus humanus Disneyus", which roughly translates into Disney's idea of a stand-in for a regular human being in their animated cartoon universe while in Pluto's case, a dog is a dog.

wasn't this question asked in the movie "stand by me" , goofys a mandog, another quote from the movie who will in a fight superman or mighty mouse, remember supermans a real person and mighty mouse is a cartoon, but mighty mouse picked up 5 to 10 elephants at one time and threw them across town hard decision.

I heard that goofy was originally suppose to be a cow but other artiest changed him to be more dog like or vise Vera, but that might be wrong

He's an anthropomorphic dog (This means he's a character displaying abnormal qualities he shouldn't such as talking walking on two feet ,etc. etc.)
