You have to look at James Dean in context. His ability to convey adolescent angst, confusion, & raw emotion set a new standard, opened doors. Compare his performance in GIANT w/ the surfacey performances of "stars" Rock Hudson & Liz Taylor. Likewise, his performances in EAST OF EDEN & REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE project an agony never before seen on the screen. Like Brando & Newman, he changed the perception of screen acting, replacing "indication" of emotion with feeling & communication of those feelings. His performances still hold up & young actors--good, sincere actors--have been influenced by him whether or not they have ever seen any of his performances.

Have you ever seen a James Dean movie? You can relate him to Orlando Bloom except for the fact he actually stared in the movies he played in... It's kind of like Elvis and Tupac though they were just great people at their trades who passed before their time was due... I don't obsess over James Dean but he was the person everybody wanted to be and all the girls liked in the 50's... Why do alot of women still obsess over Marilyn Monroe???

Because he had such a tough exterior yet inside he was fighting many demons. Much the same a Marylin Monroe. People are always fascinated with successful people who have tortured souls. Otherwise people still wouldn't care about Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain etc. James Dean was the rock star of his time.

People are still fascinated with him, for the very same reason they are still fascinated with Marilyn Monroe... they are movie icons. They were good actors, but mainly they give out the standard for beauty in that time. And both of them died tragically, which made them inmortal

It’s the stigmatism of his image – since he died so young (Like Marilyn Monroe) society is attracted to tragic loss and potential that these celebrities had and that will never be realized. Since we didn’t see what they became – we can only glamorize in our minds how and who they would be today and then. Just think, if Marlin Brando had died early – we would only remember him from “On the Waterfront” and not as the heavy, crazy guy he turned into on his island.

Unfortunately I think people are fascinated with him cuz he died. I mean, I think if he would've lived on he would've had a long-lasting career and woulda paved the way for a lot of actors. I think people loved him cuz he was different, but loved him more cuz his story was tragic.. it's like a lot of actors/actresses, musicians, painters who die early ...
