Thanks for the responses so far. The co worker does not seem self consious at all, she wears sleeveless tops all the time. She scratches/picks at her skin, and smells like she just rolled out of bed. I'm mostly concerned that if I decide to become pregnant that I would somehow be endangering the fetus by being so close to her,

and yes, to some extent I am bothered by the mentally retarded, etc. For example at work we employ 3 mentally challenged people to clean etc, and one girl has sores around her mouth which she touches with her hands. She cleans our bathrooms and then comes to me to borrow a pen to write down her time. She stands very close which makes me squeemish and then I throw away the pen and go wash my hands. I guess I'm just afraid of catching something or getting sick.

It is difficult to tell, but if your coworker seems "comfortable" about her rash it is probably psoriasis. This is a chronic skin condition which is not transmisible, nor contagious.

The lesions are usually bigger than a usual rash, they are red with a flaky surface located mostly in pressure areas (like elbows knees..), but can spread all over, especially in the neck and head.

There are pretty effective treatments nowadays (including medications and sunbathing (UV light is good for psoriasis)), however you can't cure it, just keep it down.

If it's psoriasis, don't worry, it's just bothersome for the one who suffers it due to the aesthetical aspect of the disease. If it's psoriasis you should be very supportive to her, because these people suffer a lot, because they will usually avoid going to a pool or wearing clothes that uncover their condition. Psychologically is very tough.

It could be however another condition however. I think that the idea someone else gave here about talking to your boss about it is good. Your co-worker may have already made him (her) aware of the condition, so he can explain it to you without having to embarass your co-worker by asking.

Please don't let your sense of disgust roll over on to your co-worker as he/she probably is quite self-conscious about the condition. My guess is that if were a contagious situation they would inform others or take time off of work. Dermal problems are almost always not transferable. Maybe you can turn your disgust into boldness and ask asap so your fears can be put to rest. Do overweight people, spastics, amputees, mentally handicapped, etc... also offend your sensibilities?

The only thing I can think of that might help you is bringing it up to your boss, in the nicest less snobby way possible. Tell him your afraid of catching it if its something serious and tell him you would hate it if everyone caught it in the office.

Or.. ask him if he knows what it is.

Sound like psoriasis and I know it looks gross, but it's not catching.
