He really existed, but his real name was Chief Sealth. There's a statue of him in Seattle.

I believe you mean Chief Sealth of the Duwamish Tribe who wrote a letter in 1855 concerning the proposed purchase of his tribes land. Seattle is a corruption of his name. Yes, he existed.
