depends on the envelope, but one way I find works is to hold the envelope over a pot of boiling water and open it at the sides and not along the normal seal. The heat softens the glue so you can pull it apart, then when you press the edges back together as the glue returns to normal temperature, it reseals the envelope

I just love answering these questions with dubious intent!

You could use the steam method but that might possible warp the paper. Or you use a really sharp blade to carefully score the paper along the sides of the flap that seals it. Then when you want to close it again, glue the flap to what's left of the back of the envelope. Not easy but its another option.

The best way to leave no trace is to roll a pencil (or slim pen) inside the gummed flap, then reseal with glue. Steam always leaves clear evidence of tampering.

put on the kettle and hold your envelope above the spout as the water is boiling the heat melts the glue. or even better get the iron out and iron it

Hold it in the steam of a kettle but i think it has to be a gummed envelope.

Open it perfectly where the flap is sealed down. Then tape it back down neatly when you close it again.
