I'm a college swimmer, and while I'm a sprinter, we do a lot of work with the distance group to work on our endurance. Now, what events do you swim and how much do you want to improve your endurance? how much time do you have to practice? I'm going to assume that you're asking about endurance for competive racing, and not for regular lap swimming, although the same principles apply.

If you're a sprinter like me, then I can tell you what we do. First and foremost, we swim 9-10 times a week. Monday-Saturday we have afternoon practices for 2-2.5 hours, where we go about 5,000-6,000 yards. Monday, Wednesday, Friday we have an hour lifting at 6 a.m. and an hour long swim at 7. During the morning swims we do anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 yards.

Now our main endurance work is usually during the morning swim. We do sets like 3 1,000's descending (each one has to be faster than the one before it) for time. Rarely do we go a full 3,000 yards fast for time, but it does happen a few time a year. Swimming these distance immediately after weights has the double advantage of keeping us loose and helping our endurance.

Some other sets we do as a team that work on endurance include 20 x 100 yards freestyle all out on the 1:30. The goal is the keep your average time as low as possible. Another work out involves swimming decreasing distances, separated by an underwater swim.

If your an I.M.er, a favorite drill of our coaches involves doing 12 300 yard ims. If your a flyer or breaststroker, you might want to do a workout only in your stroke. Some of the backstroke people do something similar, where they'll swim alternating sets free and backstroke.

In short, only practice is going to help you endurance. You also have to remeber that you lose your endurance 4 times as fast as you regain it. So if you take a week of, it'll be about 4 weeks of swimming before you'll regain what you lost. So it's best, even if you can't do the workout above, to swim 5 times a week. At 3 days a week, you're mostly working on maintaining your endurance and not increasing it. And remember, yardage done is the key to success. Plus all that work will get you in great shape. Hope that helps.

Swim a lot. Like at least 3 times a week going as much distance as you can. That should build endurance.

Cute. Building up endurance takes cardio work. Make sure you get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day and at least 3 times a week. Then build up til you do it every day. Then an hour a day. Eventually you'll be able to -um- last longer. Ha. ;)
