I live in Atlanta, and LOVE it. I've lived in GA for 17 years...in Augusta & then Athens for college, and ATL for the last 9. Atlanta is great because it's what I like to call a "small big city." We're the largest city in the Southeast yet, not so big like a lot of the other major cities...Houston, Chicago, L.A., etc.
Atlanta has really grown in the last 5 years brought about by companies moving in and creating jobs. I teach school in a suburb of Atlanta, called Marietta. It's pretty nice there. Atlanta has quite a few well-settled suburbs that are great to raise families in....Marietta, Woodstock, Alpharetta, Duluth. They're all about 10-20 miles from the center of Atlanta.
The weather is great here too. We don't get any major weather conditions. The most we ever get is lots of rain from hurricanes that travel north from FL, and sometimes small twisters. But, that's hardly ever. Plus, it doesn't snow in winter, but it does get cold (40's).
Hope that helps you out! =)
Oh, and what the guy above said is true, however, people who fit in those categories can be found elsewhere too (I'm sure FL has a lot of that). Unless you're going to move to rural GA, then I wouldn't worry about it. Stick to either the metro Atlanta area, or even Augusta (Columbia County to be specific) and you'll be fine.

I lived in Fulton County, outside of Atlanta in East Point, for 3 years. The weather can be frightfully hot and humid at times in the summer. The winter wasn't too bad, had a little snow, fall and spring moderate. We had some tornado watches, but all hit north of us in Cobb Co. If you have Asthma like I do the air quality can be pretty bad, especially prior to a thunder storm. Atlanta can have what is called a heat inversion, where the hot air comes down to the surface and traps the pollutants, this can cause respiratory problems and allegeries of all types. That occurs occasionally, but it was comfortable otherwise. I lived there just before the Olympics in 1996, I understand from some recent arrivals it is the New York City of the south. The ole country south is quickly disappearing. I enjoyed Georgia, make sure you go to Stone Mountain, that is a sight to behold.

I don't live in GA but I have been there before. I visited my ex-boyfriend's grandparents up in Vidalia, GA a few years ago. It was really great. It depends on what you like as well. Since you said family-oriented, I think GA would be a great place! They have about 25 grandchildren and they were all visiting the same time! They owned alot of land, it was perfect temperature in November, a little chilly but great! Normally its not very chilly at all, but they do see snow (unlike South FLorida - where I live too!) But Georgia also gets some hurricanes - watch out! Good luck!

If you like country music, Nascar is your favorite sport, consider professional wrestling to be real, are Southern Baptist, love the President and never disagree with him and his administration, love humidity, and being bit by mosquitoes then Georgia is the place for you. The best schools would be private or home schooling since GA ranks 48 in public schools. If you truly want to live here then Stockbridge or Peachtree City are your best bets to raise a family and still be close to Atlanta.
