We get a lot of animals dropped out in our neighborhood, and recently there was a big dog that we were afraid might hurt the neighborhood kids, so we called the dog catcher. They told us that they couldn't do anything but shoot it unless we caught it first. Well we caught it thenthey started giving us the third degree about it being ours in the first place. Is this normal for the dog catcher people to do? Or is this different, if so, what can I do?

There is no SPCA around here and the Humane Society keeps coming in and out. Anyway the dog catcher runs the only dog shelter in town.

Your town has a serious problem. You need to talk to your town leaders and police department that there is a problem with strays and that the "dog catcher" is not controling the problem. Some small towns are not lucky enough to have a shelter or humane society and are forced to kill all the strays. In this situation, effort needs to be made to get a community funded shelter made or to pay someone to keep the animals in a garage at least so some effort can be made to find a home. Effort should also be made to get a more humane way of euthanizing the animal (by a vet or someone who is certified to perform euth. by injection) Until someone takes a stand and gets the word out that this is necessary, keep catching the dogs and calling the police so they know there is a problem. Remind them that strays carry diseases and worms that can be transfered to people and they pose a bite risk to children. If you own a dog, keep him liscensed, vaccinated, and cared for so they know you are a responsible owner and are not just letting your own dog out. You can try to find a shelter in a nearby town and see if the city can work out an arrangement for strays to go there. It usually has to do with $$$ because animal control can be a difficult job and someone needs to be payed to do it. Your dog catcher is probably a volunteer or is appointed by the city and just is not an animal person. Good luck!

This is not normal, report the catcher immediately to his "higher-ups". It's unfortunate that we need catcher's to begin with, people should take responsibilties to their pets seriously. I have 6 dogs and have never had a problem with them (or any other dog in my care) getting loose....I know where all my dogs are at all times. A dog catchers job is to keep vicious dogs off the street and keep good dogs safe from the dangers until their owners come to claim them. Next to public safety, a dog catcher's first and foremost concern should be the well-being of the dog, this is somebodys pet, a member of their family and should be treated as such. The person you spoke to should not have the job they do, s/he should be reported. After all, it could be your dog he shoots next!

Not normal. They shouldn't have done that. Look on line for your local ASPCA. Call your local Humane Sociaty also. Then file a complaint with the mayors office about the dog catcher.

Er,shoot it with what? The SPCA recommends Trncs to calm a big canine. Only vicious dogs suspected of rabies should be handled differently. Call their higher -ups to report a rabid attack on you by lazy excuses for humans. The " officers" Fear of big dogs is no excuse to turn on anyone, and a Grand excuse to terminate them( afraid of big dogs= afraid of big humans). Canine vet techs employe a loop of nylon leash put thru a 10' conduit piece(yep 25' leash) knotted on one end, the other end has smaller pre-positioned knots for grip. Procedure is to loop over head and tighten as a guide only! No choking required !! Just keep loop tight to restrict movement.

Animal Control Officers, in my own personal experience, tend to be a bit rude. Maybe it's because the are overworked and underpaid? I would imagine that they have to deal with animal abusers and disrespectful people on a daily basis and perhaps that gives them an bad attitude. Regardless of the cause of their rudeness, you should call your country Animal Control Department and complain about your treatment.

Too bad they can't all be like the Animal Control Officers that we see in the Animal Planet TV shows.

Maybe you should keep it. There are so many dogs, cats, and other critters out there that need the love and companionship of good people. Could be this dog found you, not the other way around. Think about it!

They are lazy bums and they just don't want to do their job! Try calling your local goverment institution or local animal shelter. They will take the dog off your hands and try to give it a good home.
