My husband is so paranoid of me drinking any caffeine at all, but some people tell me that it's ok to drink some caffeine during pregnancy, is it safe? How much is recommended? A can of Coke a day is dangerous?

Not necessarily. You can still enjoy your favorite caffeinated drinks as long as you don't overdo it. After years of controversy over the issue, most researchers now believe that, although caffeine does cross the placenta, moderate amounts (less than 300 milligrams a day) won't harm your baby. That's about what you'd get from two or three 8-ounce cups of coffee or six cans of cola. (Keep in mind that the amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee varies widely depending on how strong it is, and that your serving size depends on how big your mug is — a typical mug holds about 10 ounces.) Many pregnant women limit their intake even further or cut out caffeine completely. If that seems wise to you, you won't get any arguments from your midwife or doctor.

It is not a good idea. Caffeine does 2 things dangerous to you both. 1.) it is a diarettic and can dehydrate you both. 2.) it is a vasorestrictor, meaning it restricts and slows down blood flow. Neither are good or safe for an unborn child. Just go for a caffeine free for a few months to be safe.

I agree with a can of coke a day. I drank Diet Vanilla Coke (which they discontinued, boo!) almost every day of my pregnancy. I had a cup of tea maybe once a week and I only drank decaf coffee when a few occasions arose. Everyone says my baby is very mellow and content since I limited caffiene. I'm sure it's an old wives tale, but it doesn't hurt. Good luck! :-)

No, it's not. Try a bar of chocolate, and then buy caffeine free coke. You can add lime or lemon to it to make it taste the same as regular- it works. My neice did it when she was pregnant. Congrats, by the way!

I am not a doctor and I can't say what is or isn't safe I would check with my doctor regarding the amount of caffeine if any. Do remember however, what you eat or drink you are sharing with your unborn child.

I drink a lot of soda and when I was pregnant I cut down to 2 cans a day. My kids are fine and healthy and happy. Doctors tell you to cut down to 1 a day.
