What was your first bike? I am coming off of a Honda XR 100 (Dirt) that was my first go-round. Totally outgrown it, experience/size wise... Am looking into some Kawi / Suzi 250's for my starter bike. I know one of the AMS instructors and he is cutting me a deal on a used, dented, trainer..
Anyone else care to share their experiences with a starter bike??
I am 5'4" and about 100 lbs.. I have been riding backseat biatch for almost 10 years, and am a careful rider... Can do small stunts, nothing spectacular yet. Have been tolling on the XR100 for over 3 years now... Just FYI~

I wear full gear, helmet AND armor. I have no desire to be roadkill lol. My dad is an ex-racer and a AMS instructor himself too. I learned from the best! Wheelie school is next on my list, after I finish the AMS street course.. Thanks so much, keep em coming!

You think I'd do wheelies on a cruiser? I am going sportbike Ma'Am, but thanks for playing! I ride biatch on a Z1000 right now. And with remodeling my home, I know it'll be a year before I outgrow a 250, but I know what you mean... I also have someone buying my trainer DB, who will want to buy my trainer 250 when I am done with it! So resale is no sweat! THX~

My fiance and I already own an Enduro, a Suzuki 350.. So not needing another one! I want a street. Don't sweat me stuntin boys, I have a safe place to do so (I am 28, not 15 lol) and am taking the safety course b4 getting behind the handlebars AND a wheelie course to learn proper tricks.. No small expense, but it is my only head ya know? lol...

If you want to stay Suzi, go w/ a GS500 or a naked SV650. Kaw has the Ninja 250 but its range is really limited and they have a Ninja 500 too. Remember, you get a fairing, is gets qualified as a sport bike and insurance goes up

seems that all the answers on here are either cruiser or sport. May I suggest an enduro, or dual sport. The handleing characteristics will be like the dirtbikes that you are used to while allowing you to ride the street. learning the streets is hard enough without haveing to learn the riding charateristics of the bike too!
Getting a midsize dual sport will give you plenty to learn with more power AND the dangers of the street, while still allowing you to go play/stunt on the dirt where you don't have traffic/police/and other assorted safety issues to worry about.
If you haven't had one already i would also suggest a street riding course. check your area for whats available. the ams instructor you know should be able to point you in the right direction.

Okay, get ready to be blown away ! I am a 59 year old grandma & my first bike was in 1968 & it was a red Honda 350. I had long dark hair like Cher & wore a Bucco helmet with all butterflies all over it. Cars would pull up next to me at traffic lights to see if I had boobs to see if I was a girl.
Oh yeah, at the time I had a 2 year old son & had been married 3 1/2 years.
Unfortunaly I can't ride no longer had spine surgery & had rods & screws in my back & can't take any chances. If it wasn't for that I would be a Harley Momma !
BUT I do drive a big honkin' Ford 4 X 4 pickup that is really hot, that's why my nickname on here is Mammer/Jammer (from an old Ford truck commercial that you wouldn't remember)

Like some of the others said, the SV650 is a great bike although you may have some issues with the height. For a 250 sportbike the Kawasaki I hear, is pretty good fun. If you wanted a small bike that was a bit more forgiving than the high strung Ninja, check out the Buell Blast.

I have an R6, and it's my starter bike. I think it's great for starting; I know that 250s are always recommended as a starter, but you will outgrow it really fast.

I'm 5'2" and manage to fit on it, so I'm sure you'd be fine. I think a 600 is a good size to start on a street bike. Especially if you don't want to feel like you should trade it in in a few months.

Biggest mistake beginner riders (especially females) make is getting a 250cc. You'll outgrow that in a matter of months. Get something in the 500-750cc range.

You didn't state if you wanted a cruiser or sports bike. If you want a cruiser, the best four starters are:

Honda Shadow 600cc
Kawasaki Vulcan
Suzuki Savage
Yamaha Virago

I bought my first bike two days ago, an '05 Yamaha V-star 650 (highly recommended by a number of my biker friends). I'm 41, took the MSF riding course in May and got the "bug" to have one of my own...been riding biatch with a girlfriend of mine since last Sept, and have a few thousand miles of riding under my butt (har har) since then, but operating one is a new experience.

Be safe and enjoy!

My missus learned on dirt, as a kid, and had a Honda 100cc in college. Later she had a 360. She inherited my Honda 600 Shadow VLX for a few years and currently rides a 750 Magna.

She is about the same height as you are, not as light, but not a heavy, either.

You go girl! But as a rider for 30 odd years now remember,SAFTY!!! Bikes wre desighned with 2 wheels, both were intended to be in contact with the ground. Watch and ride as if you wre in every vehicle you can see.The open road is more dangerous than the dirt.

Ninja 250 is ok, but a Suzuki SV650 may not be too big either. If you want to try something less race oriented, look at a yamaha Virago 535
