The Shield it has the best defense

If you look at who had the best eleven players on defense, I'd say the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers. They were mean, tough, smart, strong and fast.

The best defense I ever saw was the 1985 Bears. I don't think their defensive backs were as good as the 76 Steelers, but it was hard to tell because they rarely got to test those DB's. The Bears intimidated their opponents, confused their opponents and completely overwhelmed their opponents.

The problem with the Bears' great defense was that it didn't last long. The Steelers defense was a great defense for a number of seasons and helped win a number of championships. The same can be said of the Dolphins defense of the early 1970's and the Dallas Cowboys of the same era.

As a Giants fan, I like the Giants defensive teams of the 1980's. Lawrence Taylor was awesome but the rest of that team was exceptional. Linebackers Harry Carson and Carl Banks. Leonard Marshall and George Martin at the ends with Jim Burt and Nose Tackle.

I whole heartedly agree with Hunter.

The 1976 Steelers (the team that didn't win the Super Bowl) followed by the 1985 Bears.

It's funny because whenever people mention the Steelers they always forget the team in 1976 becuase they didn't win the Super Bowl. That defense was nasty.

The Bears in 1985 is a great #2...probably a 1A.

How many times has a team won the Super Bowl and the defensive coordinator was carried off the field on the players shoulders?

They usually lift up the head coach. Which they did for Mike Ditka. But Buddy Ryan was also hoisted up on the shoulders of his defensive stars.

I have to say the 2000 Ravens and here's why. All the other aforementioned defenses had something this defense didn't have, and that's an offense that could score points. I mean, how many times did this defense bail the offense out? I can't even remember. I remember they were blocking punts even in the post season to win games. Awesome.

For the people saying the 76 Steelers, greatest defenses of all time don't fall apart in championship games. Giving up 24 to me is falling apart. Sorry guys.

We all talk Steelers, Bears, Ravens...does anyone remember the Cowboys "Doomsday" defense of the mid to late 70s? OK, they competed with and against the Steel Curtain, but they went to 4 Super Bowls and won 2.

The best defense has to be the 72 Dolphins. They wouldn't be undefeated without it

The 1985 Chicago Bears. They had the record for fewest points allowed until the Ravens broke it a few years ago. They also pitched 2 shutouts in the playoffs
