He didn't care that I was a tomboy. [very taboo in the 60s] He liked to watch me play baseball with the boys.

WOW!! This is tough and brings out alot of memories. My grandparents had farm and I used to love to go visit them. The only part I hated was the geese....those things were mean. Grandpa was always a hard worker. I'll never forget when they finally put an indoor bathroom in the house and I didn't have to run to the outhouse through the snow in the middle of the night!! HAHA However, my fondest memory of my grandfather is that of my grandmothers last day. My 2 older cousins were asked to help come take care of her, but as teens they refused. So it was me who went up there to do just that for grandpa. The day she left us, we walked into the room where she was laying in bed, hand in hand, ready to read a letter to her from her best friend from school. She turned over and was gone. Grandpa and I shared alot that day and for the next couple of days. I was the one he chose to go up to the casket and give her one final kiss before the closed it. My birthday was 3 months later and grandpa came to see me and told me "good bye". I didn't understand or didn't want to. The next month, he was gone....to join grandma so he wouldn't be sad and lonely any more.

It's not a sad memory....it's a wonderful memory. Love like that is rare. It's special.

When I was young I loved spending time with my grandpa. He liked to go shopping (and buy nothing). I hated going shopping w/ him b/c he would look at everything in the store. Also he knew everyone so he would talk to people forever too. We would literally be in the store for hours. I was about 8 or so. I would always tell him I'm ready to go. Looking back, I'm glad I made those trips with him just to spend some time with him.

I never had the experience of having a grandfather. They both died before I knew them.

Watching him ride my sister around on a riding mower.
Seeing a playroom full of toys he built for my sister.
Seeing the sparkle in his eye when my sister walked into a room while brushing me aside.

My sister sucks.
