Ah so, good question. Country music is more than just rock with an accent...it is the beginning of the blues. Country singers tell of heartbreak, life's miseries, alcoholism, drug abuse, and losing the things that mean the most to them. The steel guitar is the heart of the twang. There are some very humorous country songs as well, many of the "rock" styles of country have been stolen from rock n roll to support country listeners, because that is about all they listen to...country. Same with rock n rollers, that's all they listen to. See how that works? Nana

Real country music - not that twang pop crap you hear on most stations - is great stuff. It's musically pretty, with lots of string work (mandolins, guitars, banjos) decended from European folk music. Lyrically, country music is about Saturday night and Sunday morning. It's stories about working class folks getting by, getting drunk, falling in and out of love, dealing with their spirituality and their lot in life.
Check out Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams Sr. or III, Merle Haggard, and the list goes on and on.
Rock music is basically country plus blues - blues brought the rhythm, country brought the strings.

I would say the attraction to country music is that it deals with more day to day events and situations, that the people who are attracted to it can relate to.
I can't really relate to "'Cuz tha boyz in tha hood are always hard
Ya come talkin' that trash we'll pull ya cord
Knowin' nuthin' in life but tah be legit
Don't quote me boy 'cuz I ain't said ****"
or
"The Gates of Hell lie waiting as you see
There's no price to pay just follow me
I can take your lost soul from the grave
Jesus knows your soul can not be saved"
Its really just a matter of what someone can relate to in their own life. Music is a very personal thing.

I don't listen to Country, but I've noticed that many country albums tend to sport young, attractive blond-haired women. I can't help but wonder if that's part of the attraction that the Cd companies use to market country.

A lot of the songs are actually about something different- they might tell a story, for instance. I guess that some people really relate to some songs and find it easy to listen to.
It's also good for children or people who get offended easily because it's got no swear words or offensive phrases in it (mostly).

My attraction to country music is that it has a very unique vibe to it, it's pure, it's sensational, it's what my father listens to when we are in the truck going on country rides together with my mother, and it is pretty swell!!
