People in general.. I can only speak for myself when I say I prefer using Answers to using a search engine, most of the time.
Reasons:
Answers is better as a forum for discussion, especially when it comes to subjective questions. For instancer, why didn't you use a search engine to find the answer to the question you are asking us?
Search engine... it's just you and the computer. With Answers, there is the human element. some people give honest answers, others just poke fun, and yet others are downright rude, but that's people for you.
when you ask a question, people can share their opinions and offer varying perspectives. With a search engine, you'd get the information, but it lacks the human touch. Sometimes answers from wags make me laugh. For instance, i asked a question once, "Who would you hate to be stuck in a lift with?" and someone replied " you!".
Search engines may or may not give you accurate information, but it is not 100% correct. There is a space on answers, where the best answer is selected, either by the answerer or by the community. You don't get that with search engines.
Search engines work one way. they just provide information.
Answers work both ways. It provides answers AND a speace for asking questions.
Search engines... where's the fun?
Answers... say no more...
Cheers.
Extra thought...
When I do serious research, Answers is just one tool, search engines are far better. I only use answers for fun, asking mostly trivial and fun questions.

Even though this is hosted by Yahoo (a search engine company) 95% of all posts refer to Google as their #1 source or info.
Maybe Yahoo should just give this site to Google.

Some of them might be too lazy. But I agree with Tia Maria. Maybe they want a more personalized answer than Google can give... though for stuff like trivia questions, I'm not sure that a more personal answer is possible.

search engines dont give straight answers
search engines dont get what you mean when you want an opinion or a very SPECIFIC answer
and search engines arent fun/funny/interesting

I agree. Most Yahoo! questions could be answered faster by going to google, wikipedia or imdb in the first place.

Maybe they want a more personal answer than an automated one.
