Sounds like you might need to defrag. If you go into All Programs, Accessories then System tools, you will find options to Clean Disc and Defragment.

Do both of these at least once a month. You can still use your computer normally while it is doing this.

If you are maxing out your R.A.M Random Access Memory it will cause you computer to slow considerably. Increasing your virtual memory will only free up more PF Page Files and cause your processor to work harder. With windows XP it is good to have Around 512MB of Ram. If you already have that much RAM. Then you have software consuming the use of you CPU. To see if that is the problem go to Start Menu,HELP AND SUPPORT,Under pick a task on the blue Microsoft help screen click Tools,Then Click System Configuration Utility,Click OPEN System Configuration Utility,On the System Configuration Utility Panel Click the far right tab"Startup. Then click Disable all. Click Apply. Click OK. The Program will ask you to restart click Restart Now................After the desktop has loaded Find your Virus Protection in the start menu,I think you said Norton,You need to have it up and running anytime you are connected to the Internet. You should notice an increase in desktop loading speed.

Okay, 256MB ram is enough to run Windows but more is better. Since we know you have 512MB of ram with 32 MB going to your onboard intel screencard.

It looks to me like you have done everything.

Pres CTRL ALT DELETE, click the PROCESSES tab, and click the CPU column twice. Check if the process on top is using between 80 and 100. If that process is anything other than system idle process (assuming you're just in windows with no other programs open) then you know what is casuing the problem.Click on the process and end that task.

If that didn't help goto the HP Solvve aproblem site and see if anything looks familiar.

or update some of the drivers and the bios

If all that fails re-installation of the OS is most likely the best option. The links i gave are for the DV1000, but there are different versions of the DV1000 (DV1000, DV1000t and the DV1000 CTO).Click on the source to find your model if it's not just a plain Dv1000.

Oh yes wait, Last but not least don't forget the processor throtteling function. If that laptop uses a Core Solo/Duo Processor or a bios capable of Speed Step then the processor might be running at a slower speed than rated due to heat or low battery(or just to conserve battery). It could also be throttling incorrectly (i.e. the laptop not actually overheating) due to a bug in the bios.

Defrag is your friend. Do it like once a month and your computer will be a lot better off.
Also, check to see how much RAM you have and consider an upgrade. Microsoft recomends at least 128Mb but i would say 512Mb would be good.

Finally, if all else fails, REFORMAT!
Good Luck

Defragment your computer. start>program>accesories>system tools>disk defragmenter

Have you checked the RAM size and the data bus speed/data bus size of your computer?

ok, if you are sure your pc is free of virus and spyware, this is what you do next:
check the event viewer to see if any hardware or software is not functioning. pay attention to those error, especially disk read/write errors. It indicates hdd problem. Hdd failure is one reason that I can think of now.

right click at my computer > manage

How much RAM do you have? Many brand new systems are sold with not a large amount of RAM and can sped up with the addition of more RAM chips or new, bigger capacity ones.

Computer Slow

Download and then run startup.exe at:

http://www.mlin.net/startupcpl.shtml......

Can't live without it and windows...

Then disable and/or uninstall whatever u don't need.

Other things to try:

1 - Disk Cleanup (removal of temp files, cookies, etc.)
2 - Defrag
3 - Registry Cleanup (CAN BE VERY RISKY!)
