wow, I posted the same question

this was the best answer I got

If you see more than a couple of fruit flies, that means they're being born nearby.

Your colleague left an apple on his desk. A lone fruit fly found it and laid eggs on it. The eggs hatched. Enough time has gone by for metamorphosis, and so you now have a cloud of fruit flies. They're sticking around because the apple still smells good to them -- smells like a good place to lay more eggs.

I do think its unbeliveable that they multiply so quickly. I also read that they only live 24 hours

Intelligence is a relative term..
Life must be "intelligent" enough to feed itself and survive
long enough to procreate..
Is "self-awareness" the benchmark for being labelled as
"intelligent" life ?
I would not call insects, bacteria, plants etc. intelligent life
and although animals are not generally self-aware, they are
usually considered intelligent life..
Its a tough question with definitions & perameters.

Chances are they can just "smell" the fruit if they're in the area- I doubt they're very intelligent.

Evolution. They wouldn't survive if they couldn't find what they need.
