These are all FREE.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

Get Norton or McAfee Virus Scan. Those are the best 2 which are out and I wouldn't recomend any others. I've used both on different PCs and they always caught every virus before they could do any harm. I would also recomend reformatting your hard drive. Back up everything first.

Do it in this order.

1. Back up everything you need which you don't think is infected.
2. Get a copy of the Virus Scan program you want
3. Reformat your hardrive. (System Recovery) just keep hitting F10 while starting your computer and it should go into it.
4. Install the Virus Scan program
5. Update Windows
6. Install everything you backed up.
7. Run a full Scan of your hard drive.

That should correct your problem. I would also recommend if you can get away with not needing anything backed up it would be better.

I would also recommend that you get Ad-Aware. It is a free program provided by Lavasoft to remove malware and other such things which the virus scans do not pick up because they are not usually a threat to your computer, but track what you do for advertising purposes.

You can get Norton Virus Scan 2005 for free with the Google Pack if it is still offered. I would recommed buying the newest version though.

Also keep your version of Widows up to date. If you have XP there is an automatic update program offered by Microsoft.

If you have a lot of virus on your computer probably the best program you can use is format.exe. If you know the specific virus names you can get individual cleaners from someplace like Norton antivirus. http://www.symantec.com. The problem is identifying them. But regardless they do a lot of damage and if you have a lot of them it's better to let someone who knows how get anything you wanna save from the computer, back it up, format it and re-install everything with of course a new virus program. And quit being a cheapskate and go buy a good virus program, update it every week and schedule it to do bi-weekly scans of your drive. Viruses are not a thing to play around with anymore. They do a lot of harm. They can include trojans that take over your computer and let it be used to send spam email (which is illegal) for the people that created them as well as infesting all your friends and people you email a lot with copies of the viruses you have. They can also do identity theft.

nicely Avast is probable the least complicated determination for your self. take a glance on the consumer handbook jointly as your at it. And eliminate spyware scientific expert. commonly anti-virus classes use equipment materials so as that they commonly gradual the laptop down, yet counting on hardware and settings, commonly its the two minimum to not significant, and commonly its uncommon that it could make a extensive effect on equipment overall performance. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that some anti-virus classes are very poorly optimized and might have a considerable effect or your computers overall performance.

Lavasoft.com has a program called Ad-aware...it works really well and even though it's free it's not a trial version (you can upgrade it for a charge). If it's really bad you may have to break down and buy a service.

I prefer symantec's Norton. about $40.00, with you already having problems, do not download it, go buy one from an office supply store. It will allow you to run a cleanup before installing and then onec you get it updated, you can set up a time for it to automatically update. McAfee is another one, but I am not as familiar with it.

I agree - AVG is great. I have been using it a long time with no problems. It's free and it updates several times a day to keep current. If you have too many already, you may not be able to download it tho.

Norton Anitvirus works very well. When you buy it, it also includes a "live update" program that updates periodically to learn the newer viruses so that it can detect and get rid of them, too.
