I'm reading all of these news reports about hundreds of abandoned snakes in this state, is there an animal rescue looking for homes for them somewhere? I feel guilty buying one when there's probably some out there that need a home.

These hundreds of abandoned snakes are all over 15 feet long Burmese and Reticulated pythons. They are competing for the top spot on the food chain with the alligators of the region. Hardly suitable as pets unless you are an expert with snakes. These are the largest types of snakes in the world and can grow in excess of 30 feet.
These snakes are semi common pets but when they become too hard to care for because of their size, the owners let them go into the everglades. They often reach over 8 ft in length by their 1st birthday. Usually when they are captured they have been living as wild snakes for a few years and are very aggressive due to the lack of human contact. Most are euthanized or taken to zoos where they can receive proper care from professionals.

Okay the 1st 2 answers don't have a clue what they are talking about. Generally such animal are destroyed. With good reason feral animals can be quite dangerous to their new owners. You should really try working with an organization that provides snake owners an alternative releasing them into the wild. Contact your local Humane Society. They should be able put you in contact with a local organization.

I doubt very much if you can adopt a RESCUED snake. Usually rescued animals are treated and returned to the wild

Check the local SPCA or look on Petfinder.com for snakes in your area.
Make sure you have the correct set-up for the snake, and if you need any help with that, the local rescues will answer your questions.

THat is a great idea and I'm happy to hear it. You can try calling animal control- they often have them, and local animal shelters also get them in. Finally, if you can't find what you are looking for in these places, you can try looking at kingsnake.com under rescue groups and find one in your area.

I don't think you can adopt. They most probably dump them back into the Everglades.
