I put my pleco into a feeder guppy tank to take care of some algae, and he changed color to very patchy brown and light brown shades. Very cool looking. The gravel in my feeder tank is very mixed. I sort of just put whatever gravel I had left over so there are about 5 different kinds of gravel.

Your pleco is just growing and adapting to his surroundings. It's normal. It's probably really nice looking.

Plecos will change color with the seasons, food changes, with age, to match the gravel better.... Don't unless the changes in color aren't evenly distributed across his body.

One thing to check is the ammonia levels. As a color change could indicate the fish is stressed.

It might be stressed, try to put more hiding places within the tank.
