Cocoa butter and vitamin E oil tend to help, but there is really nothing you can do to totally avoid them. Part of the perks of being pregnant!!
As far as heredity goes, there is some truth to that, but it also depends on you. Start on the pregnancy diet that is in "what to expect when your expecting" and try not to gain too much weight. Normal ranges are anywhere from 20-35 lbs. Sounds like a lot, but it will be gone soon enough after the baby is born.
People say to eat what ever you want, that you are eating for 2. That isn't entirely true and can cause you to gain access weight and that will make stretch marks worse. Don't worry if you indulge in your cravings. Just make sure that you do it in a sensible way.
Also, exercise can help too. It keeps the muscles taught and helps relieve some of the other pregnancy symptoms. Not only that, but it will make you feel better about yourself. Take it easy at first, especially if you have never done a normal workout routine. Talk to your doctor about what exercise they would suggest for you, and the guidelines they would like you to follow.

Not really. You need to start exercising... I mean don't over due, just something that is safe for your pregnancy. Use some creams and lotions like coco butter, the more you keep your skin hydrated the better it will be. Ask around for what's the best lotions in preventing stretch marks, but make sure you keep the exercise up 'till you give birth and your doctor will assure you that it's "OK". On your 2nd trimester you can do swimming as well it's very good for you.
My mom did not have stretch marks, but I have the worst... I wish I had followed my own advise.

i am 22 and preg with my 2nd child.....i am very petite gained about 40 pounds with my first baby and didnt get stretch marks(besides my boobs) i am 6 months preg with my 2nd and dont have any so far.....it is true that you cant do anything to prevent them but i dont believe in the heredity part...my mother has stretch marks really bad! it depends on your health and the elasticity in your skin...i always keep real moisturized even when not preg and i always have had a fit body from eating healthy and exercising so i think this is why i didnt get any....just apply lotion anyways and drink lots of water..thats all you can really do....good luck!!!!

Unfortunately, yes, this is usually true. My mother had stretch marks, and although I totally fought them with daily applications of cocoabutter and vitamin e, I still got them. I also think it has to do with your size. If you are a small girl with a tight stomach, chances are, your skin will stretch and tear. I was 112 pounds and had a 9 pound baby, so that didn't help either.

I have heard the coco butter works well for some women, it not work for me. My "baby marks" don't bother me or my husband. Mine did fade pretty fat and are flesh-tone not purple. If you get them I hope you can accept them as part of your wonderful experience. Good luck!
P.S. Stretch marks do not have anything to do with heredity.

I've never heard that stretch marks during pregnancy depend on hereditary traits. I've had three preganacies, two of them for twins. My first was the singleton and I hardly got any for her. The twin pregnancies, my belly was HUGE, gave me some, but mostly on the lower most part of the belly. I really think most of them came from the c-sections.

If your mother had them it does not necesarrily mean that you will have them. However, a good way to help reduce stretch marks is Cocoa Butter Cream and Vitamin E.

skin elasticity is hereditary not necessarily stretch marks...it's very hard to prevent them, keep your skin moisturized at all times, it will help, but it has to do with weight gain..you don't just gain in your stomach you gain all over, your thighs, butt, and so on, it helps your body to be able to hold and carry the baby till term. i wouldn't worry about the stretch marks so much as long as your moisturizing there is nothing else you can do.

Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting". It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.
Good Luck!
