I do wish that lightbulbs appear over their heads when they have an idea! The lightbulb which appears on people's heads is the representation of the implication of an idea which is very bright! Yeah, that would be cool when everybody has a lightbulb appear over their head if they have a very bright and effective idea which might just work! It is the same with Tex Avery cartoons, when somebody has an effective idea, the lightbulb appears over a person's head!!

I think it has to do with several things. One is that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. The electric light bulb was one of the biggest innnovations ever. It was a mark of Edison's genius and his resourcefulness--the culmination of "1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. So, it symbolizes an invention of far-reaching impact, and it has that whole Edison allusion.

Metaphorically, it also represents the "light" of inspiration--a moment of illumination that allows one to see the problem clearly--like a light going on in a dark room.

Because ... the invention of the light bulb (by Thomas Alva Edison in 1879) was one of the greatest achievements in our modern world. Instant illumination (light) helped to shape world history. It was a great invention.... a great idea. So, it seems that the light bulb became the icon or symbol of "great ideas or thoughts."
