Depending on the model. If you have a bottom freezer, more than likely it is either on bottom front or bottom back. If you have a top freezer it is probably in the back and if you have a side by side it is in the front. The front will have a small round turnable knob, behind it is the filter. In the back, depending on whether is is an add on or not it will be accessed near the water line. You can go to Whirlpool and find a manual for your particular refrigerator. If it is an aftermarket ice maker it will not be listed, but generally you can find them connected to the back water hose.

My refrigerator is a 1999 with a top freezer, ice maker and door dispenser. But not a side by side. I cannot even find reference to a filter in the manual or schematic. Ice cubes and water just started having an odd taste.

My water filter is located at the bottom of the fridge in the front. It looks like a cap. Just turn it and pull it out.

Worst case scenario... read the manual. Mine is in the front at the bottom in the dust cover.... they just twist/ pull out.
