Please don't goon at the wedding - it's not polite. Also, I didn't realise hats had to give speeches - amazing!

Okay. The best wedding speach I've heard was by my best man. He was my best mate and knew me very, very well. The thing to avoid is making too many jokes about previous girlfriends, sexual exploits etc. and focus on what makes the guy unique. The best I've given was at his wedding. People responded well, and felt I'd captured the person they knew and loved whilst also letting them in on a few innocent things they didn't know (like the fact he tried to learn to sleep with his eyes open because he wanted to be a spy!).
The best speaches are brief, engaging and humorous.
The worst I've heard was when the person giving it was already drunk, forgot to thank the people he should have thanked etc. It was a disaster.
Remember, your role is to thank and look after the Bridesmaids, as well as to give a good speach. Also, always be kind on the stag night, especially if it's the night before. I had mine a week before which is better because you have chance to recover. Getting married when intoxicated can make the marriage invalid and you don't want to be blamed for that do you?
If you want help writing the speach, tell me something about the groom and I'll do what I can to give you some pointers.

traditionally from my adventure with attending them, the toasts/speeches at a "Western" wedding ceremony are given via the terrific guy and the daddy/mom of the Bride. For "eastern" weddings, i understand little or no, different than that white is seen a mourning coloration. :D Now, considering you the two have 2, the SPEACHES and who supplies them are controlled via the Emcee, as *all people* can furnish them. The "classic" toast to the bride and groom is *in many circumstances* given via the terrific guy and/or Maid/Matron of Honour. you will could parent our which of each is going to accomplish that. by the way... this could take place in straightforward terms on the reception afterwards. ;)

When the groom, after going through the whole of the day told all the guests to look under the table they were sitting at to find photograph shots of the Bride and Best Man at it! Then walked up to the best man and knocked him out.

a good line you can use is "everyone thinks there is two rings when you get married the engagement ring and the wedding ring but in fact there is actually three, the engagement ring, the wedding ring but then comes the suffering" make sure you follow it up with something sweet.

Actually the best was from "Old School" when Luke Wilson's character stood up and spoke about how much family meant to him and the newlyweds, and a lot of other great ideas... check it out

the point of the best man's speech is to embarass the groom by telling old stories about him. like how you got drunk together and went skinny dipping, and ended up spending the night in jail naked. things like that.
but finish with wishing them a happy future together.
