I just watched "Donnie Darko" last night and all I understand is that he was supposed to die but kind of cheated death. And because of his actions he has 28 days to fix it. I'm really confused.

Donnie Darko is a movie about worm hole, the space time continum and life choices.
Everyone thinks Donnie is crazy and he does all these crazy things and hears voices and sees a big bunny - but in reality it was destined for him to be in his room when the plane crashed.

When he wasn't there (because he hadn't been taking his medication) Frank (the bunny) comes back in time via a worm hole and shows him what happens because he didn't stay in his room and die when he was supposed to.

Because of the choice he makes Donnie's school is flooded, his family hates him and his girlfriends dies. He also commits murder (By killing Frank on halloween after his girlfriend dies - Hence the count down timer)

Frank comes back to allow him to make that choice - stay in your room and die for the better of humanity or leave only to watch everything you love crumble around you.

The beginning of the movie is the true beginning, the end of the movie is when the timer starts over allowing Donnie to make his choice to save his girlfriends life and sacrifice himself.

DD is one of my all time favorite movies.

It is in the same category of movies as "Carnival of Souls" (Herke Harvey), "Twelve Monkeys" (Terry Gilliam), "2001: A Space Odyssey" (Stanley Kubrick) and "Dark City" (Alex Proyas).

Not being Hollywood movies, there is no real clear cut beginning, middle, or end. We are left with this unsatisfying feeling because there is a lack of closure.

Was the end of the movie actually the beginning? Or vice versa?
Or, is Donnie actually a paranoid schizophrenic, and the entire movie is a brief flash of a schizo vision?

The answer is that DD has no answer. I have been to so many websites attempting to explain what DD is about, and the explanations are so different that, within those differences, is the answer.

Maybe this movie explores one of the little know elements of God's kingdom, being the nature/creation of time; or, DD is a paranoid schizophrenic; or, the Universe is stuck in a time loop, and the events in the movie are destined to replay over and over again for all eternity; or, . . .

It is this discussion that makes DD so great. Whatever your point of view is will be the correct answer.

The director, Richard Kelly, has left us dissatisfied, wondering what really happened to Donnie. Our own beliefs about the nature of time and the mysteries of life and death will provide your answer.

Do you think Donnie really died, or that the movie was an illusion from Donnie's point-of-view, or . . .?

Whatever answer you give will be correct.

Here are a few comments:

1. Enjoy the film for what it is and come up with wild theories of what happened. Discuss these with your friends. I did this for a while, it was really a lot of fun.

2. If you want an "official" type explanation, buy (or if you really don't want to buy, then rent) the DVD (directors cut or original, doesn't matter) and read Roberta Sparrows (Grandma Death's) Time Travelling book "Philosophy of Time Travel" that is included. Also, several of the deleted scenes offer a vast amount of clues.

3. If you really want a spoon-fed "official" explanation of what happened, read the Wikipedia spoiler entry. It really does clear things up in quite a lot of detail.

I've seen this movie about 3 times and I understand as much as you. It's a strange movie. Supernatural almost.

This is a cult classic, so these people who've never heard of it are crazy. I've never seen the film, but at least I've heard about it.
