And why wouldn't it be legal right now?

I think it should be legal. In my opinion, drinking should not be legal. People are way more dysfunctional with drinking problems than with a pot-smoking habit. I've seen this first hand.

I think it should be legalized. Children can still get it. The laws for legal cigarettes protect children more than they are protected from marijuana use. At least there is an age considered to be a time in their life that they can make an educated decision whether to smoke or not. If the US legalized pot; drivers would be tested for pot use as well as drunk driving. Cigarettes and alcohol are both potentially addicting and they are legal. Making pot illegal does not stop people from doing it anymore than prohibition stopped people from drinking alcohol. It just helps a small amount of people profit from their use. I think parents would have more control of children's use of pot if it were legal than they do now. I think legalization would be a better tool for parents than the way it is now. Come on; anyone in their right mind knows what age it was an option for them. I think people with addictive personalities will be addicted to the drug of their choice whether it is nicotine, alcohol or marijuana. I think it should have been legalized since the 60's or 70's. I don't think you will see it during the Bush administration for sure.

I think in some cases it should be legalized, because it helps terminally and seriously ill patients cope with the severe side effects of chemotherapy and other medications. In Holland it is legal, and people pay taxes when purchasing it.
If it couldd be legalized right now, I'd want some controls on who can buy it(no minors), quality control. It should be taxed and the money used to help those people who are severely ill or disabled and can't afford insurance to pay for their ailments--or it could be used as base money for a single-payer insurance program for all people.

Yes! Prohibition does NOT work. Legalize it for adults, tax it, and penalize driving under the influence.

What a waste of public money and effort to criminalize a weed that you can grow in your backyard. Victimless crimes are not crimes.

The main reason it's still illegal is that massive alcohol lobby doesn't want competition.

NO! We have too many problems with people "doing" drugs and selling them on the streets, I'm not talking about taking meds. for health reasons, i.e.: seziures (epilepsy), arthritis, allergies, ect. As long as they use them for that and ONLY that. Legalize marijunna and you'll have the streets crammed full of it. Do you want it being handed out in front of your home and it be okay? I sure don't.
One of my best friends is our town marshall, if I see that cr@p going on outside, I can phone him or call him on the ham radio.

Tina L - I don't think it is taxed in Holland. It's not really legal there, just decriminalized. The policy of the police force is not to enforce marijuana laws

the whole thing is very silly, a plant that is illegal?!! why? because some uptight suits think it's evil...? man our government is tied up thinking about some really irrelevent issues. we are at war and the folks in D.C are worried about gay marriage, and whats on sirius radio. this country is like an angry teenager that doesn't want to listen to reason.

YES! And I believe that in the U.S., or at least in California, during my lifetime there is a good chance that will happen. We're the "chronic" generation afterall.
