I just wondered whether there was a practical reason or if it is just a fashion thing.

Two words. Social conditioning. Wear what you like, I say.

Well...women didn't wear trousers until the 20's, when the flappers outraged contemporary opinion by wearing them and dressing like a man. Since then skirts have occasionally been worn by men but they haven't ever caught on. In the late 90s there were a few male UK celebrities that wore one (notably Jonathan Ross and David Beckham) so if ever they were going to take hold in the public, that would probably have been the time.

Anyway the short answer is that it is a fashion thing :)

I think it's a left-over from the days when men were supposed to be active and do all the work and women were supposed to stay at home and look after the kids - it's easier (or at least less embarrassing) to do things like climbing ladders, riding horses and hunting bears in trousers rather than a skirt.
It probably made more sense in the days when women wore long skirts, as well.

Yeah,. I know what you mean! Gals wear trousers, shorts, skirts, dresses, kilts... Men only wear 3 of the 5. Kilts are a bit like skirts, but not exactly. Skirts are considered very femenine, though, and guys dont like to be feminine (well, most dont!), but gals dont mind wearing what used to be considered as male clothes. Good question!

Ock aye dunooo. They're called kilts in some places and worn quite often therefore quite usual to see a man in one. The real question is...do you go commando or not??

I think it's just so traditional for women to wear them, and guys don't really feel motivated to.
They do have hairy legs, though, so it's not especially sexy.
