15% of 15 year old girls in the US are overweight.

Only 2% of girls in Lithuania are overweight

There are three reasons:

1) Economics. The U.S. has a much higher standard of living, so there are more food options available, and more food is directly marketed to children.

2) Greed. More households are two income families. Parents are more willing to work two jobs so that they can have new BMWs in their garages, rather than have one parent work, one stay home, and have a new car every 5 years. Because of this, America's children are raised in daycare. Talk to people that work in daycare: they always pacify children with food. Food is the #1 activity and form of entertainment.

3) Culture. We have a celebrity obsessed culture. In that culture, we routinely go through cycles of fat celebrities saying they are "embracing their bigness", glorying in being fat, and therefore sending the message to children "I'm fat and I'm liking it - its ok to be fat." No one sees these same celebrities 6 months later - while trying to get a new movie or TV contract - on a radical diet, losing all that "accepted fatness" to try and get back to work.

There's the answer: too much food available, not enough parental supervision, and fat FAT celebrities.

It has nothing to do with US being richer or having more food.
Taste the simple bread: in Lithuania it tastes and smells; naturally. There are no such products as "shrimp imitation". Sour cream is made out of milk and only milk. And milk Lithuanians get from cows that eat naturally green grass in the meadows. Seriously, go yourself, and see.
Even in Western Europe is not like that anymore. E.g. Austrians do not drink fresh milk anymore because there are some chemicals in it that goes away only after proceeding the milk. Eastern Europe countries, in general, are oases of healthful and natural food.

The U.S. is a fat nation as a whole. We've become lazy and yet we're still very prosperous. (Reminds me of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible). Anyway, laziness has become a lifestyle for many, which is quite sad. Besides that, isn't Lithuania a 3rd world nation?

It has a lot to do with our eating habits. Think about things like pop/soda and all the junk food we eat. Well maybe not junk food per say, but food that is not good for us because it is quick and cheap.

All this "low fat" and "no fat" things we eat have just as much sugar and such in them. When they take out the "fat" they add other things in that are just as bad for you, so it's not like you are eating anything better.

It's a sad day when it's cheaper and easier to buy a candy bar than it is and apple.

It's a problem for the fat girls and their parents. Not me, I eat well and exercise. There's plenty of smart people out there that eat right and get exercise. Obesity is a personal problem.

Quit saying things like, America is fat, Americans don't know anything about portions. Instead try subbing America and Americans for "FAT PEOPLE."

If I had a nail infection, It would be MY problem. So try it again together now "Obesity is a personal problem."

Processed food is the real problem. It is engineered to make you fat and hungry. It is cheaper than natural food which is more nutritious and better for you. It's all about the money, they don't care who gets fat they just want more money. The more you eat the more you are hungry the more money they make so everyone gets fat. I switched from eating processed food to natural food two years ago without dieting and have lost a tremendous amont of weight.

USA has too much freedom, not enough work ethic and too many varites of delicious food. Children in the USA are pacified with comfort food and television which creates fat adults. Too many US familes have both parents working and living life on the go while that children sit home and watch TV.

I understand the food in Lithuania tastes like c r a p and nobody over there wants to eat! (What do they have? Cabbage and beets?)

We should send them some real food and see what happens! LOL!!

The US is the most overweight country. Fast food and lack of exercise keeps it that way, I'm afraid.

My kids have physical chores to do... yardwork, gardening, etc. They're not allowed to sit in front of a screen all day and pig out on junk.

Both are healthier for it.. and thin!
