Moisture in the tank is not uncommon, and gas cap openings typically have a flap or valve that only allow gas to come in if its put in through a nozzle.
I wouldn't worry too much about it... for the small amount of water and detergent that MAY have entered the car, I doubt it would do any damage at all.
The other alternative is to go to the garage and have an engine flush... expensive... and you would need it ANYWAY if there WAS a problem
Drive your car... if, in a week or so, you've got no problems, you're fine.
Good luck!

Yes driving with the gas cap off on a car is extremely dangerous and should never be done. You did not over react at all by calling the police because this is a major fire hazard and along with the danger of cigarette embers getting accidently flicked into the cap or other fire causing substances if someone is traveling in a very fast speed limit zone and gas is leaking out then it can spill on the roadway causing other drivers to lose traction of their car and have a deadly spin out with their car. Good job on making such a good decesion when you were in an instance where this was occuring.

You'll have to have someone drain it from the injectors, I believe. Same thing happened to me when I went to a full service gas station that included the wash. They didn't put the cap on correctly. I was lucky to make it home before the stalling began. Once it was all drained it was fine. Luckily, my husband at the time knew what to do. If you don't know anyone that can do this for you, you'll have to pay for repairs. Good luck.
Dry Gas didn't help in my case. There was so much sudsy water in my system that the gas he drained was bubbly! Also, if you are going to have a problem, it won't show up immediately. My problems began the next time I started the car.

I would call a trustworthy mechanic and I sure hope you have one. Hopefully enough water did not get in. There is always some water in the gas tank due to condensation, but get too much in there and you have a disaster. I would assume that since oil and water don't mix, chances are that if you got a significant amount of water in there, it is sitting on top. So I'll reiterate. call your mechanic and ask. Or even call a few and get their opinions. From there you can make a decision on what to do if anything.

I agree with the village idiot... I doubt much got in the tank. Dry gas will help and it's inexpensive so just to be safe, buy a can. Filling your tank with more fuel will do nothing to dilute the water since the two don't mix... at all!

Hmmm, If it is running fine, great! Water would be lower in your gas tank then fuel. Cars pull the fuel from the bottom of your tank. If you begin experiencing difficulty you could always have your fuel tank drained. Any mechanic could help you out with this.

While you are probably fine, just fill up on gas to further dilute what little might have spilled in.
You see, gasoline has some ethanol in it, so water and other water soluable liquids will disolve well into the gasoline.
You don't have a problem.

Like people said DRY GAS, and also fill up your tank with regular gas to help dilute any other residual water left in your tank. You should consider yourself lucky, considering how much of an idiot you are.
