I love the SA flag and have one on my desk at work. I even have some idea of what the colors symbolize.
Black = People (not black people, but many people together)
White = Peace
Red - Blood (in memory of people who lost their lives in war and the struggle)
Blue = African skies
Yellow = Natural resources (gold and diamonds and such)
Green = Fauna and Flora (animals and forestry)
This is not set. It's only my idea of what the flag represents.

Meaning of the flag
Red for bloodshed
Blue of open blue skies
Green for the land
Black for the black people
White for the European people
Yellow for the natural resources i.e. Gold
The Y symbolizes the merging nationalities - i.e unity

I copied this infomation as it is from the website below. They do further explain that a designer was just mixing good colours which would make a beautiful South African Flag. He didn't have any meaning for any specific colour he used. The meaning only came from the public view.

I am glad you have asked a good question and received positive answers, Infact I learned few things through your question and answers.South African flag does not only represent the country,unique history of this country and beautiful people and their culture but also represent the future of whole continent of Africa and its people. We must not forget to give credit for person designed it!!
