I do it regularly myself. I'm a nurse, and know exactly how beneficial donating blood is for both myself and the people my blood can save.
However, there's still a misconception out there in regards to safety issues, such as the possibility of contracting HIV or Hepatitis from contaminated reused needles. While some developing areas in the world may still be reusing needles, most developed countries only use one-use-only disposable needles now.
Also, some people may have a fear of needles, and truth be told, the needle used in blood donation doesn't exactly have a very welcoming look.
There's also the misconception that the blood donation would drain the blood donor dry. A lot of people still don't understand that the blood donation only takes a mere 420mls of blood from any single person each time, which doesn't affect the person at all. People also don't understand that the body regenerates the blood and volume from the moment the donation begins, which might be another reason why a lot of people don't donate at all.

I actually used to donate blood and plasma, until I got a tattoo on my finger and it's been bruised for almost 3 yrs. now. They thought it might be ink that could've possibly gotten in my blood, so I'm unable to donate anymore...Kudos to you! I feel the same way, I don't much care for the pain and discomfort, but I always left the office with a sense of pride-knowing I did my part in case someone out there can use my blood.

I give every eight weeks. In fact I donated yesterday.
I think a lot of people are just afraid of the whole process. I have friends that wouldn't think of giving because they are afraid.
One friend went with me just to watch a couple years ago. After she saw the process she wound up donating that very day and is now a regular.

I do on a regular basis as well. As a matter of fact I'm on my way there in a couple of hours. I'm O- so mine is in dire need at all times.

Laziness and the false notion that someone else will do it.
Perhaps some also do not realize the gravity of the situation and just how important giving blood is.

I dunno. I think a lot of people are afraid of needles or they don't like the feeling of weakness they get. I donated blood last Wednesday. I happen to get a rush from the whole experience. It makes me feel useful.

They hate needles.
I'm not old enough to donate anyway. I plan to donate when I'm old enough, but the needle scares me.
