Yes and no. Those scams and spam emails are that; bogus. I checked into them and I realized that wasn't the way to go.
So on my spare time, I did a search for item - just stuff in general and I found a supplier who got me some cool stuff at a very low price and I didn't have buy a billion of them to get a low price.
When you first start ebay, because you will have a zero ranking, it'll be hard to get anyone to buy anything from you; you just have to be persistant and be prepared to lose a little money at first. But once you get a few ranking points, the sales start to pick up because you become trusted.
On my spare time, I made about $1000 in 3 months - I did ebay for 2 hours, once a week. $1000 for 24 hour worth of work isn't that bad :)
Just do your research and although you won't make $5,000 the first time out, you can make money if you're disciplined.

The posting fees at eBay will be brutal. But you can sell popular items. First establish a Postive feedback by selling some stuff really really cheap, and ship immediately. Use PayPal for small stuff. Remember, you have to be "Mr. nice guy".
Here are some alternatives, where POSTING an item is FREE
Try http://www.eptop.com or http://www.bidville.com or http://www.craigslist.com
Good luck

Well, I've been a seller on ebay for a few years now- off and on, and we were kind of lucky at first with what we got. My husband was helping this little old lady clean out her house because she was moving, and had a bag of old books and told him to throw it in the dump please. He said "maam, do you mind if I keep these?" She said "yes, please do". Well, he was going through them one day and discovered a whole collection of unused civil war envelopes about 100 of them- authentic, and bound in an old book. Cover to cover- mostly union ones, but we put them on ebay, and sold them at the end for over 700 dollars!! The other old books we got about 300 out of them all, so that was a find. After that, I've sold little things here or there, but I have never made any other real money on ebay. By the time you get your listing, and bids then you have to pay seller fees, and ebay fees paid, and then take the time to go to the post office, and ship it out, it doesn't seem worth it- unless you get that "lucky find" as we did.
