We installed a 4 foot chain link fence 1 year ago. We have 2 small boys and have been seeing coyotes near the fence. We are looking for a way to add some height to the fence to feel alittle more secure. ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated! We are trying to NOT have to rip out the fence and put up a new one. HELP!

Top it with concertina wire. It'll keep the coyotes out and your kids on.

This'll give you an idea:

My neighbors tried to do the same thing several years ago. They ended up placing posts between the others that were 8 ft tall and installing the additional 4 ft above the other 4 ft section already up. They made it work.

That being said, they said they would never do it again. They will remove the old and start fresh as it was a very trying time to install that stuff 4 ft up in the air. Bracing and stretching were a pain. The cost of taking the old out and replacing with 8 ft tall fencing was comparative because he could have sold the 120 ft long 4 ft tall fence for better than half of what he could have purchased the 8ft tall stuff.

It will work either way. Good Luck!

If you want just a fence, I think you will need to rip it out and start over. Perhaps you can save the posts by welding or bolting extensions onto them.

However, consider other options other than additional fencing to the height/security. For additional height, get lattice (comes in 4x8 sheets) or something similar and build a trellis structure along the fence. You could leave it just as is or plant climbing plants. Or, look into planting dense shrubs or hedges on the outside of the fence as an additional barrier. If they are outside of the fence, you could get something 'thorny' to keep out both 2 and 4 legged intruders.
