i bought three platy's with a 2:1 female male relationship, as most websites reccomend (so that the male doesn't bully the females). but now they are reproducing very quickly. is there anyway to stop it other than giving away my male?

As long as you keep them in the same place.. they will continue reproducing so one of the solutions would be to separate them..

I used to breed sword tails (about 12 yrs ago)....do the adults not eat the fry? Take out any plants that would give the fry a place to hide...if the fry are not being eaten, separate the male(s) from the females (you will have to wait until the fry are old enough to tell the difference...about 6 months if I remember correctly)...then separate the males....give ALL your males away, and any future fry born to the pregnant females...yes the females do store sperm!...you may have up to 3 litters after the males are removed.

If you don't take the fry out the adults will eat them. I have guppies, mollies, and platys all be pregnant many, many times. I've only got about 10 new fish because of this, the adults eat them as soon as they come out. I've seen a fry come out and less than a second later the mother turned around and ate it.

You can also buy a divider for your tank. You can buy them for a variety of different tank sizes. They're a thin, clear plastic piece that slides in that has slots in it to let the water pass through. Keeping male on one side and females on the other.

You need to give away the male, and then wait a few months. As platties can store up fertilized eggs for months. This is why I general buy a fish to eat the fry. (Like my bumblebee catfish Darth Catfish.)
