Planning to pursue a career in graphic design is not stupid at all. Graphic Design is one of the most promising and fastest growing careers to go into right now. It is actually listed as such in career journals, etc. You have to have a pretty solid background in photoshop, illustrator, flash, digital imaging, quark express, dreamweaver, and any other graphic programs that a particular company may use to get hired on anywhere. You are usually working on several projects at the same time and with really tight time frames to get the work done so most places won't hire you unless you have experience and can keep up. In Canada they cut out the graphic design apprenticeship program that they used to have because the technology and new programs are changing so fast that the companies don't have time to train new staff. They are constantly upgrading the staff they already have in the newest programs just to stay competitive.
If you don't have experience with any graphic programs, I would suggest taking at least a one year course in communication arts or some multi media courses, ( preferably a graphic design diploma) before entering the field. Graphic Designers are hired by publishers, design studios, newspapers and magazines, sign shops, print shops, companies that handle corporate advertising, T.V. stations, etc.and it's an excellent business for freelancing. If you have computer graphic skills and a thorough concept of the design principals now, just make sure you have an updated professional portfolio to present at your interview. Just start knocking on doors and show them your stuff and if you are willing to work for free someone may take you up on your offer. I would suggest smaller businesses at first though until you know the ropes. Good luck to you in your search.
Please excuse spelling errors..spell check not working.

Two main areas spring to mind - graphic and typographic; graphic is all things like logos, visual designs, that sort of thing, typographic can include logos but is mainly doing book layouts, maybe posters, cd-inlays, etc.
Typography will probably pay more than designing logos, but getting design jobs has a lot to do with your reputation and prior works so you need to make an impression, and get good at one area that you think you'd still be happy doing twenty years down the line.

There are as many books on graphic design as there are types of it! it encompasses anything from designing a logo to a letterhead; a book jacket to a recruitment advert; a corporate identity to an apple sticker. Go to the library and do some research. As you well know, visual representations of abstract terms usually work better than verbal ones!

You can do logo design, package design, animation, photo restoration, or basic production work (working on other people's stuff) and a big giant host of other niche areas. Figure out what your best at, and doesn't bore the crap out of you (logo design is a snoozer).

Please be aware that this is an overflooded job market and unless you aim to be an art director, doesn't pay beans.
