Conception takes place when the sperm and egg meet, so by definition it takes place after ovulation. However, intercourse should take place prior to ovulation as sperm can live in the reproductive tract for up to five days if fertile conditions are present. The egg has a life of only about 24 hours. If you wait until ovulation, you're decreasing your chances.

If you wait until you've ovulated, you've missed it. You should start at least 5-7 days before you ovulate. Most people say that sperm can live up to 3 days (egg is only viable from 12-24 hours and it takes about that long for sperm to travel that far) but my specialist said that in the right conditions they can last upwards of 7 days. Start early.

You conceive when a sperm cell fertilizes your egg cell. This would have to be after you ovulate. You can not get pregnant if you do not ovulate. Once a month a woman releases an egg from her ovary into her fallopian tube. You can only get pregnant when a sperm cell swims up to the egg and fertilizes it. Then you have conceived and the egg will take 6 to 12 days to travel down to the uterus and attach itself to the lining of the uterus and begin to grow. If the egg is not fertilized in 24 hours, it will degrade and be released from the body.

You actually concieve when the egg and sperm fertilize. The egg will live in the woman's body for 24-48 hours after releasing from the ovary. Sperm can swim around for up to 7 days. It all depends on when that egg and sperm meet.
