what are they studying? Size, brightness, composition, gravitational anomalies? there are dozens of instruments used in the study of stars. First we need to know what you want to know about them. Sorry to everyone who said "telescope" but that's just one of a myriad of instruments used by modern astronomers.

Is this a trick question?

I suppose you want Telescope. Now, do you mean the optical device originally invented by Galileo? Perhaps you were referring to the Hubble Spacecraft with its coveted clarity of the heavens? Maybe you were referring to the radio telescope array as used in the movie Contact w/ Jodi Foster in 1997?

Either way, I am not sure what your question intended, but I hope that you got what you wanted for an answer. Good Luck!

Telescopes. Optical, radio, et cetera. Depends on what exactly they are studying with the stars. Computers are also fed information recorded from the observations of scientists.

In one word Telescopes
these can be

optical
infra-red
UV
gamma ray
x-ray
radio
microwave

In all these cases they never actually look through the telescope, they use sensors that are at the focal point of these instruments and analyse the measurements using computers. So you could actually do serious astronomy workbut never actually look through a telescope. All modern astronomy research is done via a computer.

is this a trick question? i assume you like Telescope. Now, do you propose the optical gadget initially invented via Galileo? in all probability you have been on the subject of the Hubble Spacecraft with its coveted clarity of the heavens? possibly you have been on the subject of the radio telescope array as used interior the action photograph touch w/ Jodi Foster in 1997? the two way, i'm uncertain what your question meant, yet i desire which you acquire what you mandatory for an answer. solid success!

let see it depends on the type of study.........if some one wants to know the composition of the star then he/she will use the spectrometer......and form the wavelength of light one may predict the chemical composition or element of the star.........if one want to know the distance and age of the star then he/she will use radio telescope.......if some one want to see what is going on (eg explosions etc) within the star then highily powerful optical telescope copled with the radio telescope helps scientist to do the such study..........I hope this answers your question.......
Best wishes
