That is so hard. There is no real tell tale sign, but more of a feeling that you get. The nice thing about human beings is that we are equipped (most of us anyway) with a sixth sense that can tell us a lot about someone right as we meet them. Some people listen to that little voice while others don't and that is why some people get into a lot more "trouble" than others. My advice would be to listen to those feelings and follow them. If you suddenly feel like your skin is crawling when you talk to someone, run away. If you feel like you can't stand anything the other person does and the slightest mannerism makes you want to kill them, get out. Be true to yourself and listen, because if you don't you will end up resenting that person even more that you did waste your time on them. If you also think that you will LEARN to love that person over time, the odds of that are pretty slim and I would not recommend going that route. Time is valuable and only spend it on the people that you really feel are worth it!

The sad truth is that some people either never do or find out when it's too late. If you have any suspicion that you may be wasting your time, talk with the person and share your feelings.
By the way, why is this question in music?

You first need to spend some time to see if they're worth your time. Spend the time, see if they're interested IN you, interesting TO you, consider your opinions valuable, and in general, treat you with respect and kindness. If not, then you have your answer.

If you have to ask the question, the person most likely isn't worth your time!

It's supposed to be instinctive but even when I've known it, sometimes I've taken no notice- And later regretted not listening to my inner voice.

When they do not show you or anyone else respect.. When they only want to go to McDonalds'.... when they do not keep themselves neat and clean... Anyone who is half way worth it can tell when someone else is not.

When you're always there for them, no matter what, no matter how trivial their problem and they're never there for you at any point (always too busy, etc, etc) and especially not when you really need them!
