Yup. Once you learn that we live in a Godless, empty universe, that the concept of justice is a petty, woollen-headed abstraction, and that this wretched, thankless struggle is the only life that you will ever have, it's impossible to unlearn it. Still, it's a laugh, isn't it?

I think simple people, unfettered by deep thoughts, tread more lightly through life. Their options are limited by their abilities, and many simply accept that.

I once had a co-worker who was crushingly stupid. In addition, she had no common sense and was also naive. The breadth of her world-view was approximately what she could see through a drinking straw. Because of her simplicity and malleability she was given a promotion (upper management decided they wanted a plow horse instead of a Derby contestant, I guess). In spite of her patent inability to do her job properly, the almost constant ridicule she received from her supervisors over mistakes, and her failure to garner any respect from those she supervised, she was happy. She was just so grateful to have been given the promotion that none of the rest mattered. It was quite amazing.

Bright people are used to being good at things, and when something goes wrong it's frustrating. If they recognize a FUBAR at all, stupid people aren't frustrated - they had no expectation that they would get a good grade on a paper or test, be complemented on their work, etc. For stupid people, when something goes well it is a miracle. I guess stupidity is a sort of un-cynical pessimism - when things go well the day is full of pleasant, unanticipated surprises.

Just my take on the matter.

Happier than what? I think they are happier because they can't understand the full import of tragedy in the world today.
The real question - Are stupid people happy, or are happier people stupid?

Yes because you either have to be stupid or ignorant (they both cause each other, in my opinion) to not notice the enormous amount of human suffering going on in the world. From outside our front door to the other side of the world it can be so painful to watch / experience ourselves.

I believe that something must be very wrong indeed to have a situation where if your intelligent and informed about the world you are more likely to get depressed by it. I think it’s a horrible reflection of how our world currently is. Therefore the very nature of the world today encourages people to be stupid and ignorant, which surely only make this vicious cycle we are trapped in worse!

I believe if we want ourselves to be truly happy and create a better world for our children to live in , we must swim against the tide of this vicious circle by getting informed and encouraging others to do so. This way it will eventually become clear as day for a large number of people that the current status quo is completely intolerable and there will be a wide spread consensus among them that action must be taken. Take for example the Poll tax in the UK; that tax was so intolerably high that in the end the whole country united in anger and forced it to vanish. The same thing happened in France earlier this year when the French government tried to put through a labour law that was massively unfair to the young. The fact is though, both of those things effected peoples lives immediately and significantly enough for them to take notice and to easily see the damage it would cause them and others. I think if most Americans understood that a huge amount of their hard earned tax dollars went into the insane killing of 100,000's of innocent Iraqi's including their children and the pain that this causes they would all demand to throw their leaders in jail immediately. But of course they don’t because Iraq is a place far away and does not immediately affect them (no bombs on their doorsteps), so they continue with their own lives in blissful ignorance and denial. When a guy like me points out the suffering going on it means that they have to face up to it, start doubting the sanity of it all and realise that knowing the truth is in fact a nightmare, hence ignorance is bliss. Then of course it just gets pushed to the side and forgotten about rather than playing on their mind and in the end catalysing them into doing something about it. Like getting more informed and informing others to build the consensus that something must be done to stop it and so many other insane acts of killing in the world. I wonder how that could be done?

First I don't believe there are stupid people, yes some are less brighter than others, and are they happier, I would say yes, they usually have no hate in there heart.

I think they are. More intelligent people over analyze, they worry more, they want to better themselves more, they're probably more competitive, they always question things and make things complicated.

Less intelligent people however, are usually happy to plod along and take what they've got, they're happier with simpler things and simple pleasures.

All the smart people have asked me to notify you that we are too happy and cannot assist you with the 50% of the population who are 'stupid'.

I hope that makes you happy, but, actually, that being said in the gist of good manners, couldn't care less if it does...

I'll be on my yacht, in the harbor, away from the riff-raff.

Yes. Intelligent over analyze, and stress way too much. Stupid people don't have that option. Ignorance is bliss.

not necessary. stupid doesn't mean they're mindless or can't think at all. they may not make the best decision of all or they may know less stuff, but they still have emotions and always feel pessimistic especially when they realize they're just not smart enough.
