the americans call the finals of their baseball series the World Series, with the winner becoming World Champion.....
For someone to become world champion you would have to beat other countries etc, not just your own national league???

or are there really teams from contries all over the world participating?? I doubt so, since the latest championships for national teams showed that there are very good countries out there, so one of their teams surely would be capable of reaching that world series final.....

You're right. It was certainly a provincal mindset that gave the World Series its name.

2 countries? Hardly a "World" champion.

I do think it would be interesting to see a real World Series these days.

But tip your hat to MLB who conceived and sponsored the pre-season World Baseball Classic last spring.

The World Series is the only true world-sporting event, where the best team plays in the best league with the best players. Unlike the European Football leagues, they have a league for each country, and elite teams in it so since they don’t all play against each other you may never actually know who the best team is. In baseball, the cream raises to the top so to speak and the best team wins. Because MLB will and does find the best players from around the world and have them play in the league, below is a list of some countries that have had players play in the World Series.

Aruba, Austria, Australia, Bahamas, Colombia, Cuba, Curacao, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panama, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, South Vietnam, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Virgin Island, Venezuela, and Wales just to name a few

Only American Teams participate
One representative team from the American League and one representive from the National League

Its the way it been for decades and its the way it should stay

MBL does its part to the World by hiring an increasing number of foreign players

The American public is the primary support of MBL
the American public deserves to continue to have American teams and American teams only participate in its World Championship

Maybe you should check with the UN on this they seem to have
an opinion on just about everything these days

Maybe they can set up a league and dilute the sport even more

There used to be a newspaper called "The World" in America in the early half of the 20th century which started the tournament. So, The World series refers to the name of a now-defunct newspaper that started the competition, and does not mean that it is the world championship.

well it's called the World Series because American baseball is the best in the world. there are other leagues (Japan leagues, Mexican leagues, etc) and all the big shots from there come to play for the MLB. think about it, baseball is america's sport and the best of the best come to play here. you don't see people as good as Pujols, or Ortiz, playing elsewhere. major league baseball is the most competitive and professional baseball league in the world.

Well technically...the Toronto Blue Jays are from Canada so that means 2 countries participate in the MLB

Good question!
The NBA champions are also called the world champions.
I believe it has to do with the overconfidence of the US. It also adds to the hype which increases TV audiences (more $$). Both baseball and basketball are US sports.

GO METS!!

It is a little more accurate title now that the MLB is having such an influx of foreign born players. (This is great!) I think the champion should just be called MLB Champions.

The WORLD Series was NOT, I repeat, NOT named after a newspaper!

I wish people would reseach thier answer before answering.

That whole newspaper thing is just a myth.

Besides, we are Americans, we can do what WE want.
