Q1) Why is is called football when 95% of the time you use your hands?

Q2) Why has the word football been replaced with the word soccer? Is it because the Americans said so?

There'll be a film out soon proclaiming America invented it (the game of football) just like everything else they didn't invent but like to take credit for ;-)

An answer to your first question:

In the 1800's there were many games named "football" that had differing rules in differing cities.

There were Rugby rules, Austrailian rules, American Rules, and Cambridge rules.

The Cambridge rules was the most popular in the British commonwealth because the game was more established, and how people couldn't get hurt as easily as when they played the Rugby rules.

The Rugby rules game went over to the USA and Austrailia.

Those countries liked the rules a lot but thought the game was unstructured. Pretty much like a mosh pit with a ball.

The Americans introduced end zones, play formations and stoppage of play every time a player was down, and the forward pass to make the game into a game of extreme strategy, a game that would challenge the minds of the college students that played the game at the time.

The familliar helmet and pads were only invented after the American players started to die after playing the game and President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to ban the game unless there were some saftey measures.

The Aussies got bored with rugby and decided to make their own game too.

But the Cambridge rules were far more associated with the name "Football" and the name stuck internationally as the game became popular.

That's why we call gridiron football "football".

The word "soccer" actually comes from England, where the modern version of the game originated.
In England, there were two types of football: rugby football and association football. The slang term for rugby football was "rugger," and the slang for association football was "assoc." The word "assoc" gradually evolved into "soccer," which was much easier to say.
When association football was introduced to North America, gridiron football (the type played by the NFL and in the Super Bowl) was already well established. To avoid confusion, Americans adopted the British nickname "soccer" for the new sport.

Football...the sport known as American football...was invented by an Army General because he felt that rugby was boring and undisciplined.

When HE...the American...invented football...you could use your feet to advance the ball and even score.

European Football...the pansy sport you know of as Soccer takes it's name from Futbol...that name was adapted by Europeans to football because it made sense to them...despite the fact that there already WAS a sport in America with that name.

The American sport of football is completely too dangerous to try and advance the ball with your feet - but why change the name.

Back when Spain called soccer Calcio...Brazil and Portugal and Italy all called it by a similar name...America called it soccer ...
I think futbol was the gay name the French used.
Europe liked it and lengthened it.

Q1) exactly

Q2) Soccer is supposed to be based on the term aSOCCiation football. Invented my the Yanks i'm sure who thought in order to make their sport better they would nick the name of a popular sport and use it for their own and hope that no one would notice that they hardly use their feet.

Additionally... Baseball - World Series.... whats that about then.

P.S American Football is OBVIOUSLY the best.

The last American Football World Cup was amazing with so many different teams competing and a worldwide audience of so many billions.

Oh thats right, it's so good, only one nation plays it, hence the "American" part of the name.

Why do you care what we call it in America? Maybe you and other futbol fans should get over your inferiority complex and just live your lives. Is your quality of life reduced because we do things differently in the States?

I believe the term soccer originates in England and is in reference to kicking a sock around. I know it has nothing to do with the US.
